The recruitment of apprentices, their subsequent thorough on-the-job training, and possible career paths are described. Many maiko and geiko are not from Kyoto. Furthermore, few of them had any prior experience in Japanese traditional dance and music before embarking upon their careers. How in the world did such girls, with no prior connections, get into the Kyoto hanamachi?
