A view from the bus: on the roadmap with the National Institutes of Health Asthma Networks.

The January 2007 theme issue is focused on the contributions of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) asthma research networks, sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI; Fig 1). Personally, I have had the opportunity to participate in 5 of the initiatives described in this theme issue. My first encounter with an NIH asthma research organization occurred as a young faculty member in Buffalo, NY, when I was a member of Elliot Middleton's Asthma and Allergy Disease Center. Subsequently, I benefited from participation in individual research grants, asthma program project grants, and, for the last 15 years, NIH asthma networks.
