RFLP at the growth hormone gene locus in Vechur and Kasargode cattle of Kerala.

Blood samples from 78 Vechur and 33 Kasargode cattle maintained at the Conservation unit of Kerala Agricultural University (India) were used for this study. A 768-bp fragment enclosing the polymorphic Mspl site within the third intron of the growth hormone gene was amplified by specific primers. The digestion of the PCR product with Mspl enzyme revealed two alleles, namely (+) allele (612, 93 and 63 bp fragments) and (-) allele (705 and 63 bp fragments). The frequencies of Mspl (+) and Mspl (-) alleles were 0.35/0.65 and 0.48/0.52 for Vechur and Kasargode cattle, respectively. As in the case of other Indian cattle, the Mspl (-) allele was found to be more frequent in both of the breeds tested. The frequencies of different genotypes in the two breeds of cattle were 0.04 and 0.18 (+/+), 0.63 and 0.61 (+/-) and 0.33 and 0.21 (-/-). The different genotypes did not vary significantly (P>0.05) for birth weight and other body measurements analysed and the probable reasons are discussed.
