Efficacy of parenteral iodine supplementation on hypothermia in buffalo calves.

After subcutaneous administration of 1 ml of the iodized oil containing 375 mg/ml of elemental iodine, the pre-treatment mean rectal temperature (96.8+or-0.12 degrees F) of the hypothermic calves significantly increased to 100.4+or-0.12 degrees F ten days after the iodized oil administration. All the treated calves showed clinical improvement and recorded normal rectal temperature. There was a significant increases in the mean plasma inorganic iodine levels from the pre-treatment value of 59.25+or-9.82 to 178.55+or-42.4 ng/ml after the treatment and these results were further supported by the significant fall in mean triiodothyronine (T3) levels from initial value of 2.83+or-0.16 nmol/l to 2.15+or-0.20 nmol/l ten days post treatment. However, the mean thyroxine (T4) levels recorded a non-significant decrease from the initial mean value of 79.79+or-11.45 nmol/l to 66.26+or-11.69 nmol/l at day 10 post treatment.
