Hippos are relatively robust and healthy, and medical problems are rare. Skin lacerations from the tusks of other herd mates are common and can lead to progressive and fatal consequences (Taylor and Green wood, 1986). Lazarus (1997) reported lacerations. on the head and shoulder of a hippopotamus that had been acquired by fighting with other hippo. The present paper describes a case of multiple lacerations and perforated wounds involving head in a hippopotamus at Nandankanan Zoo.
