Genetic and non-genetic factors affecting the litter traits in desi and crossbred pigs

The reproductive performance of 708 litters which belonged to desi, 50 and 75% Large White x Yorkshire crossbred pigs were studied. The overall least square means for litter size at birth and weaning for the three genetic groups desi, 50 and 75% Large White x Yorkshire crossbred pigs were 5.82+or-0.22 and 5.25+or-0.21, 6.22+or-0.14 and 5.54+or-0.14, and 6.77+or-0.16 and 6.33+or-0.15, respectively. The corresponding figures for litter weight at birth and weaning (kg) for desi, 50 and 75% Large White x Yorkshire crossbreds were 5.13+or-0.20 and 50.62+or-2.46, 6.52+or-0.17 and 55.14+or-1.50, 7.50+or-0.80 and 64.23+or-1.58 kg, respectively. Seasonal differences were significant for litter size at birth and litter weight at weaning in all the three genetic groups. The sequence of farrowing had a significant effect on litter weight at birth, litter size and weight at weaning in half bred pigs, whereas it was significant for litter size and weight at birth in 75% crossbred pigs.
