Antioxidant Activity of Different Fractions of Centella Asiatica in Goat Blood

The chloroform and chloroform-methanol extract of Centella asiatica (Apiacae) were evaluated for their effects on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in goat haemic system in vitro. Significant decrease in lipid peroxidation in the presence of chloroform fractions was observed where as methanol fractions were ineffective. SOD activity was significantly increased in chloroform methanol fraction of chloroform extract whereas catalase activitywas inhibited. The result showed that chloroform fractions were more effective than methanol fractions for combating oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals or through glutathione detoxification system.
