De-tusking of large white Yorkshire boars.

Eight Large White Yorkshire boars (18-24 months old and 200 kg) with overgrown tusks were used in the study. All the boars were de-tusked surgically under combined physical and chemical restraint. The boars were tranquilized chemically with two regimens: combination of intramuscular injection of ketamine (2 mg/kg body weight) and acepromazine (0.2 mg/kg body weight), and combination intramuscular injection of ketamine (2 mg/kg body weight) and diazepam (0.1 mg/kg body weight). The de-tusking was performed with a heavy duty bolt cutter. The duration of tranquilization was 6-9 min for the ketamine and diazepam combination, and 10-15 min for ketamine and acepromazine combination. It is suggested that ketamine and diazepam combination is more effective during de-tusking in adult boars. The use of bolt cutter is also effective in performing de-tusking as no splitting is observed.
