Treatment of injury in a snake.

A case of accidental injury in a male cobra (Naja naja) was described as well as its successful treatment [India, date not given]. The snake presented with an injury and protrusion of coiled intestine from the right lateral aspect of the body. The wound was fresh with no apparent contamination. The snake was restrained by applying adhesive tape around the mouth. The wound was cleaned with 2% povidone iodine and infiltered locally with 2% xylocaine. The protruded part of the intestine was gently placed into the body and sutured using chromic catgut 1-0 in horizontal mattress pattern. An antiseptic ointment was applied on the wound, and gentamicin was given for 3 days. The wound healed completely after 10 days of therapy, and the snake was released into the forest after 15 days of care.
