Genotypic differences in climatic adaptation were examined using 4 genotypes of Echinochloa frumentacea and 7 genotypes of E. crus-galli subsp. utilis evaluated for days to emergence of seedling from soil, optimum thermal time for seedling emergence, seedling root length and grain yield under high altitude conditions in the Garhwal hills of the Himalayas using three temperature regimes (sowing dates of April, May and June, respectively). Climatic conditions in April remained cool. Early emergence of seedlings, low thermal time requirement, normal development of roots and high grain yield under the April sowing were shown by cultivars of E. crus-galli subsp. utilis which were better adapted to the Garhwal hills region.
