Dry (10-12% moisture content) and healthy seeds of Vicia faba were irradiated with gamma radiation at 10, 20, 30 and 40 kR. Another set of presoaked seeds was treated with 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04% MMS [methyl methanesulfonate] for 6 h. Data were recorded for plant height, leaf area, days to first flower open, days to 50% flowering, number of flowers, number of branches, number of leaves, number of leaflets, fertile branches, number of pods per plant, pod length, pod girth, number of seeds per pod, number of seeds per plant and 100-seed weight. One variant plant with exceptionally bigger size of pods and larger seeds was isolated in M1 generation from the 10 kR treatment. Another mutant characterized by the presence of closed round flowers that did not open at all was isolated in M2 population of 0.04% MMS treatment. The mutant showed premature fall of flowers and leaves, and was completely sterile, no pod and seed setting was observed, the floral parts, namely calyx, corolla, androecium and gynoecium did not develop normally.
