Examination of milk samples from 105 cows and 45 buffaloes from organized herds and 65 backyard dairy buffaloes fortnightly since calving up to 150 days using California mastitis test (CMT), TBC and SCC revealed cut-off values of 10 000 and 7 lakh/ml of milk for TBC and SCC, respectively, for determining subclinical mastitis. However, milch cows and buffaloes with TBC value of 10 000 to 12 000 and SCC<7 lakh/ml of milk were graded as latent mastitis. On the average, latent mastitis was detected up to 45 days of calving and thereafter, these cases transformed to subclinical form, and 90 days onwards of calving the clinical mastitis was recorded.
