'Mediterranean' is not just the name of a sea but describes a climate found around the world, characterised by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. NIGEL COLBORN examines how the gardening styles of these areas make full use of colourful, sun-loving and drought-tolerant plants. It was difficult to take the recent United Nations prediction of an impending world water shortage seriously when rain was lashing my windows so hard that it drowned the radio news bulletin. However, despite current climatic blips, the indications are still firmly in place: global warming will result in drier summers, shorter winters and less frequent frosts. In short, our UK environment is getting closer to that of the Mediterranean, so if water supplies are to become increasingly scarce, it seems sensible to review some of our planting styles, and try to adapt them to the new conditions.
