摘要

Shrimp mainly of genus Penaeus is a major sea food in Eastern coast of India. The shellfish processing industry in India generates 8.5 million tons of shell waste per year. About 35 to 45 per cent by weight of shrimp raw material is discarded as wastedepending on the species and processing method applied. Although part of the waste which mainly consists of exoskeleton and cephalothorax is traditionally used for chitin/chitosan preparation, feed manufacture and manure, a major portion remains unusedor underutilized. Environmental implication of traditionally disposal methods of such waste, coupled with strengthening of environmental regulations in many countries, has created an interest in alternative methods of disposal/ utilization of this waste.
