The term spouted bed was first used in the 1950s by Gishler and Mathur to describe a flow structure that could be developed by the injection of a jet of fluid into a bed of solid particles. Spouted beds are now recognised as one of the regimes that can arise quite generally in fluid-solids contacting. These beds rightly continue to attract interest due to the particular processing characteristics offered. The significance of the beds was made clear with the publication by Academic Press of the book by Kishan Mathur with Norman Epstein in 1974 entitled "Spouted Beds". The present book is dedicated to Kishan.
