Earlier this year Wayne Burgstahler, owner of Burgstahler Machine Works, St. Helena, Calif., received a simple request: Two Scoutmasters from St. Helena Boy Scout Troop One asked to borrow some equipment so that their Scouts could build smokers for sandwiches they make and sell during an annual town festival. The Scoutmasters, Peter Collins and Chris Phelps, also hoped the shop might be able to fabricate components with equipment that couldn't be removed from the shop. Collins and Phelps got much more in return than they originally anticipated when Burgstahler turned their simple request into a full-scale metal fabrication project and learning experience that introduced the Scouts to metal fabricating.
