The joint ECS Georgia Section and Student Chapter meeting was held on November 17, 2011 at the Molecular Sciences and Engineering Building at Georgia Institute of Technology. Fernando Garzon of Los Alamos National Laboratories, and ECS Senior Vice-President, presented a talk on "Micro-Tomographic Imaging of Electrochemical Devices." He spoke about the principles of X-ray tomography and its application to fuel cells, in particular for the determination of reliability and modes of failure. The internal structure of the fuel cell can be imaged without disassembly to observe void formation and investigate the micromechanical effects in the membrane with cyclic operation. In particular, determination of cracks and chemical analysis of the displacement of Pt catalyst were observed within the cathode membrane. He also described artifacts that can be present and indicated how to interpret X-ray tomography images.
