A number of major activities occupied the minds and energy of the ECS staff and leadership in the year 2001: an enterprise-wide computer systems upgrade, new composition and online delivery methods for the ECS journals, and the establishment of a fund-raising and development program. These changes have set the stage for improved publications, meetings, and member benefits. Preparations for celebrating the Centennial year in 2002 helped the Society review its past 100 years with pride and helped it to keep looking forward while undergoing a year in transition. The spring 2001 meeting was held in Washington, DC with 1,583 attendees choosing from 1,158 papers in 34 symposia. Dr. Fred Wudl of UCLA presented "Fullerenes for the Rest of Us." This lecture was the first in a new series of Sunday evening talks planned to provide opportunities for attendees to learn more about other areas of electrochemical and solid-state research within ECS. The plenary lecture for the meeting was the 1997 Nobel Prize winner in physics, Dr. William D. Phillips, of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). It may have been one of the liveliest and most spirited plenary lectures in the history of ECS. With copious use of buckets of liquid nitrogen, flipping of flattened frozen exploding balloons into the audience, levitation of spinning magnets, and dancing around on stage to illustrate atomic motion, Phillips gave an exciting lecture on laser cooling.
