As might have been predicted, the introduction of NCEAhas had a significant influence on students taking 1 -yearuniversity chemistry courses, although the feared lack ofchemistry knowledge does not appear to be one of them. One unanticipated outcome noticed at Otago Universityis the students' noticeable focus on assessment, seem-ingly a direct result of the numerous assessments thatthey have to cope with during Years 11-13 (and in somecases Year 10). This results both in tutorials run by theChemistry Department being poorly attended and in fewstudents completing the pre-laboratory exercises.
