Numeric nutrient criteria update

In January 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nronosed water quality standards for Florida, known as numeric nutrient criteria. These criteria are quantitative water-quality standards that will apply only to Florida. By imposing a unilateral federal regulation, EPA is essentially undoing the positive efforts already under way by the state agencies that are most familiar with Florida's unique needs. EPA's proposed water-quality standards are litigation-driven and establish specificlimits on the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen permitted in Florida's flowing waters.
