Philorhizus sigma (Rossi) (Carabidae) rediscovered in South Hampshire

On 4 June 2014 we sieved a litter pile near the Moors River in South Hampshire (VC 11; SZ1297, modern Dorset) and obtained two specimens of Philorhizus sigma (Rossi). This is a very local species in the United Kingdom, with scattered records from West Sussex north to Cumberland and North-east Yorkshire (Hyman, 1992). Luff (1998) mapped a pre-1970 record from SZ19, suggesting that our record is a rediscovery of a long-standing population. With post-1980 records from just five other sites, the 2014 provisional Red List of Carabidae from Great Britain has assigned this species a status of Endangered (Telfer, in prep.).
