Australia is a major exporter of LNG to the Asia Pacific region. The North West Shelf (NWS) venture leads this trade and has exported more than 2800 LNG cargos, with the first cargo dispatched to Japan in 1989. The venture represents an investment of A$27b ($28.6b). Natural gas is produced offshore and is piped 125 km to an LNG export terminal at Karratha, on the Burrup Peninsula, near the industrial port of Dampier.
