Yardley and colleagues sought to compare and contrast the experiences of first-year medical students who were simultaneously interacting with 'simulated patients' and participating in 'authentic earLy experiences'. In analysing a data set from a previous study, the authors discovered that preclinical students made judgments on differences between the two types of learning. The authors aimed to evaluate student perceptions of the gap between simulated and authentic patient interactions in order to better understand how these perceptions shaped their Learning.
