Professionalism' is a buzz word in medical education right now. Public expectation is that the medical profession will ensure high standards in its members, not only in knowledge and technical expertise, but also in integrity, compassion and ethical behaviour. In response, 'professionalism' has been introduced into curricula both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This presents a challenge because the values, beliefs, culture, and behaviours comprising medical professionalism are complex and dynamic.
