Among the various strategies that have been proposed for reducing the effects of global warming, catalytic fixation of CO2 has become the subject of considerable attention since it offers the additional benefit of affording a route for synthesizing high-value chemicals. One such example involves the reaction of CO2 with epoxides to yield cyclic carbonates. Unfortunately, this process requires the use of high pressures and temperatures as well as toxic organic solvents, thus posing significant economic challenges. A more attractive approach is offered herein, where the authors report the synthesis of amine-functionalized graphene oxide (AP-GO) as a highly porous, bifunctional, recyclable, and environmentally-benign catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates.
