In view of their comparative rarity in the UK, it may come as a surprise to some readers to learn that the group made up of frilled breeds is the largest in the canary world. There are certainly more frilled varieties than there are breeds in the group of popular UK canaries -such as Fifes, Borders, Norwich, Yorkshires, Glosters and Lancashires. I would also venture to suggest that frills have a longer history than most. The first report of a canary that was frilled around its neck came as early as 1690. Its origin was in Europe, somewhere within the area of France, Holland and Germany. Place names and national borders have changed during the past 300 years but, given sufficient time for research, it should be possible to arrive at a more precise location.
