U.S. health officials have moderated their position on the safety of bisphenol A (BPA) for use in food and beverage containers. FDA’s long-awaited announcement says there is “reason for some concern” about potential adverse effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children. FDA has outlined plans for further study before any regulatory action is taken. FDA says it is prepared to take additional action on BPA if warranted. However, regu- lators are constrained by the structure put in place for regulating food additives more than 40 years ago, FDA says. “Given concern about BPA, and the ongoing evaluation of and studies on its safety, FDA believes that the more modern framework is more robust and appropriate for oversight of BPA than the current one.”
