The Problem: When you need to pass another horse in a class, your horse gains speed. The Exercise Solution: Sidepass How to Perform It: After I have my horse trained to move off of my leg with both his front end and his back end, as we discussed in the April and May issues of the Journal, then I want to combine the front end and back end and move the whole horse as one piece. I do this by creating a position with my leg directly between my shoulder position and my hip position, right in the middle ofhis rib cage. I start out by tipping his nose the opposite direction of the way I want to travel and applying steady upward pressure with my leg. As soon as my horse moves away and takes one step laterally, I release my leg pressure. I then repeat thisprocess on one side over and over until my horse immediately moves away from the solid pressure of my leg.
