The “Analects of Confucius” (Lun Yu), a collection of the works and deeds of Confucius and his disciples, is considered one of the most important classical works in China. During the 200 years since James Legge’s complete English translation version of “Analects of Confucius” was published in 1893, numerous English versions of “Analects of Confucius” have emerged, and the work of translation still continues. Translation is regarded as transformation of meaning conversion from one language to another language; it creates an interaction and collusion among different cultures. Therefore, this thesis attempts to analyze the different understandings of“shi”with Chinese and Western influences through the writings of James Legge, Arthur Waley, D.C. Lau, Raymond Dawson and Roger T. Ames’s five different English translation versions of “Analects of Confucius”, to establish how the effect and influence of translation plays a significant role in the dissemination of Chinese culture to the world.%《论语》是记载孔子言行、思想、主张的重要著作,其影响源远流长。
