The Problem: Horses speed up or lose collection in a pleasure class. The Exercise Solution: The Hip-Over Exercise. How to Perform It: The hip-over is basically a forehand pivot. I want to have the same control with a horse's hips that I gained with its shoulder using the indirect turn exercise we talked about last month. I start asking for the hip-over by tipping my horse's nose in the opposite direction of the way I want the hip to go. It makes it easier for the horse to learn to move its hip away fram my leg pressure if its nose is going the opposite direc-tion from the direction I am pushing the hips.
