ACC specialty chemicals index falls 0.9% YOY in July

American Chemistry Council's (ACC) specialty chemicals market volume index declined 0.9% in July 2016, measured on a three-month moving average, compared with the year-ago month. Of the 28 sectors ACC tracks, 17 improved year over year (YOY), with 11 falling. The big winner was adhesives and sealants, which improved 10% YOY. Cosmetic chemicals was up 4.1% YOY. The losers continue to be led by oilfield chemicals, which declined 16.1% YOY, and mining chemicals, down 7.3% YOY. Foundry chemicals and electronic chemicals both fell 7.8%. Year to date (YTD), the index is down 1.4% versus 2015, with 17 sectors up and 11 down. Adhesives and sealants are up 8.0% YTD compared with the corresponding period in 2015, with flavors and fragrances up 3.6% and cosmetic chemicals 3.4%. Oil field chemicals and mining chemicals fell 18.7% and 10.0%, respectively, in the first seven months of this year versus a year ago, with foundry chemicals and electronic chemicals down 7.4% and 7.1%, respectively.
