It is a great privilege to be invited to comment on John Champion's paper, 'Challenges of forensic evidence - some observations of a new DPP'. The value of a robust, productive and open relationship between forensic science and medical organisations and the Director of Public Prosecutions cannot be overemphasised.John's paper provides a fresh perspective on the role of the DPP, and describes some significant challenges for forensic science to continue to deliver a meaningful contribution to the justice system. John also describes some new initiatives that create an opportunity for the forensic science profession to engage more effectively with the Victorian Public Prosecutions Service. Through his paper, John highlighted his initial observations of the role of DPP and his role in leading change across the newly established Victorian Public Prosecution Service (VPPS). In particular, John focused on explaining the goals and core values applicable to the new VPPS.
