Service learning: philosophy to practice

There has been a quiet revolution in education during the past decade, a revolution where the pioneers of promoting civic education can be found in agricultural education. For almost 75 years, agricultural programs have maintained an active policy ofencouraging students to "build character and promote citizenship, volunteerism and patriotism" (FFA Mission). Basically, agricultural educators have long been using service-learning methods. We have involved our students in service to the community through programs such as Building Our American Community (BOAC), Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS).
