Harsh words: a personal view from an NVH obsessive who is approaching his sell-by date but refuses to give up on his obsession

NVH is one of the most fascinating branches of engineering as it involves so many disciplines as well as interaction with the complications of human sensations. But although great progress has been made in understanding and controlling noise and vibration, new challenges are appearing all the time. One example is the electric car: the layperson assumes that he or she will receive silent power from electricity but the reality is a vehicle emitting annoying whining noises (those motor controllers produce horrible, distorted voltage waveforms and those high-speed lightweight motors must have gearboxes). The nasty noises don't go away when you lift off the 'gas' either; indeed, they sometimes get worse. And to get reasonable performance and range, electric cars must be lightweight, so there is even more road noise than usual.
