Celanese-Mitsui & Co. JV begins methanol production at Clear Lake, TX

Celanese says that its 50-50 joint venture with Mitsui & Co., has completed construction of the previously announced methanol production plant at Celanese's integrated chemical site at Clear Lake, TX. The plant has a capacity of 1.3 million m.t./year and is now operating at full rates, Celanese says. Celanese announced plans to build the methanol unit at Clear Lake in 2012, and Mitsui agreed to take a 50% stake in the project, in 2013. “This investment provides us with supply certainty for a critical raw material and allows the acetyl chain to gain the economic benefit of abundant low-cost US natural gas,” says Mark Rohr, chairman and CEO of Celanese.
