The bone marrow finding of pure red cell aplasia in a patient with esophageal candidiasis raised suspicion of infection with parvovirus B19 in the setting of an underlying im-munocompromised state, such as unrecognized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. When the patient's previously requested HIV serology was obtained, it turned out be positive; the CD4 count was 60/)jlL, indicating an advanced state of imrnunosuppression, and the HIV-1 plasma RNA level was 56,459 copies/mL. Hepatitis B virus serology was negative, but hepatitis C virus serology was positive.
