Spinal surgeons are often confronted with symptoms arising from lumbar instability. These symptoms can consist of low back pain with or without a radicular component. Nontraumatic instability can be suspected from the symptomatology. Patients report pain and discomfort upon load bearing (assuming erect posture, lifting, or walking), and the symptoms usually subside upon resting or lying down. If the instability compromises the neural foramina, a patient will have pain involving one or both legs.
