Classification, measurement, and debate-the science of peritoneal dialysis

In this issue of Peritoneal Dialysis International (PDI), the image on the cover, taken from one of the published papers, is meant not only to make the journal more eye-catching, but also to highlight a particular aspect of the work reported. The image selected on this occasion comes from a paper by Niko Braun and colleagues that explores the expression of periostin by peritoneal fibroblasts in biopsies taken from patients with encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS). Their paper is one of a number in the issue covering aspects of that condition, including two excellent commentaries that explore EPS classification. Watson and colleagues discuss macroscopic surgical appearances; Lambie et al. propose a structured approach to the systematic reporting of EPS; and a group from Hong Kong present a retrospective study describing an adverse risk for the subsequent development of EPS associated with non-resolving peritonitis.
