The economics of BVD control in dairy herds

BVD is the most important endemic viral disease of cattle, and is associated with a huge range of different diseases. It directly causes embryonic loss, stillbirth, and congenital defects in neonates, acute diarrhoea and haemorrhagic disease in calves, and mucosal disease with chronic diarrhoea in older cattle. Indirectly, through immunosuppression, BVDV infection increases the risk of most diseases, the most important of which is respiratory disease in youngstock, but mastitis and neosporosis are also significantly increased in adults.
