Coal could play pivotal role in keeping California lights on

California is in desperate need of additional power supply in the coming years, and coal might play a pivotal role in meeting the need if the Frontier Line transmission project comes to fruition. The governors of California, Utah, Nevada and Wyoming are backing the proposed project that would build a new interstate high-voltage electric transmission line across the Western U.S., originating in Wyoming and with terminal connections in Utah, Nevada and California. Such a line would allow the wheeling of both clean coal and renewable-generated power from the Inter-mountain West to consumers in Utah, Nevada and California. The governors - Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA), Kenny Guinn (R-NV), John Huntsman (R-UT) and Dave Freudenthal (D-WY) - are pushing for the line to enable 50 percent renewable power and 50 percent clean coal power.
