Mycotoxins of indoor fungi occur in house dust, bioaerosols and fungal spores in very low concentrations.The immune-modulating effect of such compounds has been found in tissue culture as well as in the mouse model for single compounds. Detection of such compounds in human beings by biological monitoring has not been demonstrated unambiguasly. Concerning the health relevance of such mycotoxins only hypotheses can be formulated to date. Forthetrichothecenes of Stachybotryscharta-rum it seems likely that under worst case-conditions exposure concentrations are reached, that may correspond to the effective concentrations (order of magnitude) derived from tissue and animal experiments. Further investigations are needed to both clarify the possible effect of mycotoxins of indoorfungi on building related health effects (e.g. influence on allergy development) and to assess the riskfor health-effects.
