Metabolic compounds produced by mould, i.e. microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOC), are possible indicators of concealed mould infestation. There are several reasons that make the evaluation of concentrationsofthesecompoundsdifficult.Though reference values for rooms without mould growth have been suggested there is a lackof studies in moldfree environment. Apart from the production by mould asthe primary source, MVOC can also be released from secondary sources.Thishastobeconsideredinthe evaluation of MVOC measurements.In June 2002 active sampling was performed in 18 children's bedrooms withoutvisible mould growth to analyse MVOCs during the GieBen Indoor Allergen study (GINA-study). Additionally, indoor climate parameters as well as total mould counts were measured indoors and outdoors. Room characteristics and habits of use were assessed with a detailed questionnaire.The resultsshowed no significant correlation between mould counts, climate parameters and MVOC. Indoor drying of washed clothes indicated a significant association with MVOC. None of the other indoor parameters was identified as a potential secondary source of MVOC. MVOC were conspicuously higher than in other studies. Definite causes could not presented in detail.The results of this study underline the need for more data of indoor MVOC measurements in order to create reference values and find additional sourcesfor MVOC.
