Dependent personality disorders unlike avoidant personality disorders are not related to alexithymia after controlling for depression: A reply to Loas

Patients with dependent personality disorders (DPDs) indeed are characterised by both self-reported difficulties in appraising their own emotions (i.e., alexithymia) and depression, as Loas (2012) correctly noted in comments on our article and in previous studies (Loas et al., 2000, 2011). Loas commented on our findings from a previous study (Nicolo et al., 2011) that persons with dependent - and, we add, also passive-aggressive and depressive - personality disorders (PDs) featured alexithymia and that the correlation persisted after having controlled for the Global Severity Index of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) (Derogatis and Savitz, 2000).
