Commercial production of fruits of the Jujube or Chinese Date, Ziziphus zizyphus, has been a promising development for many years, but till now has never really got off the ground. Now all that may change. While potential growers have been attracted to the crop, the difficulty has been getting tree stock in the quantities required Grafted jujubes have been as scarce as hen's teeth, andprospective jujube orchardists have given up in the face of the poor supply situation. Now WANAT'CA member Jim Dawson, of Gidgegannup, has made a significant dent in this problem. Jim has established a new jujube orchard which this year should yield one tonne of the fruit, which is finding a ready local sale to ethnic groups such as the Chinese and Vietnamese, who arealready familiar with the product from their homelands.
