IQA's Diploma in Quality is a national qualification designed to equip students with the techniques, theory and practices required to enhance an organisation's quality systems. But why was it developed? Coming to the end of his period as the diploma's chief examiner, Dr Rhys Jones reflects on what has been a formative period in IQA education. Employer demand is now moving towards flexible education and training which can be tailored to company needs. This allows the retraining of employees to improve competitiveness and recognition of the learning needs of employees in globalised businesses. This factor proved to be one of the key catalysts for change within IQA's education strategy, when it was recognized that the quinquennial review of the syllabus undertaken in 2000 needed to reflect both the vocational and academic needs of the diverse membership of IQA.
