Safeway sold its 213-store business in Canada to Sobeys unit Empire for $5.68 billion. The US-based grocer said it plans to spend $2 billion from the deal on reducing debt. The Safeway operations are in western Canada, and along with the stores include four distribution centers and 12 manufacturing plants, the Wall Street Journal reported this week. Empire said it would look at integrating the distribution system. Safeway Canada revenue was C$6.7 billion in the last year through Mar. 23 and adjusted EBITDA was C$513 million... McDonald's global same-store sales grew 2.6% in May (vs May 2012 sales) from an expanded Dollar Menu, and with new selections such as an egg-white breakfast sandwich and chicken Premium McWraps. US same-store sales increased 2.4% Europe's 2.0% in May... Walmart is increasing focus on online sales and company pres/CEO Mike Duke told shareholders on June 7 that the company is on pace to record $10 billion this year. Total Walmart ecommerce sales this year are on track to equal about 2% of total company revenue... Target will grow its organic and natural store brand food offering by 25% by 2017 with its new food brand called Simply Balanced.
