In new BC effort, ONP left in mixed paper loads

Some West Coast newsprint mills complained about a new British Columbia recovered paper program that recently began where curbside residential old newspapers (ONP) are not separated out of mixed paper, contacts said this week. About 8,000 to 10,000 tons/month of ONP was generated in BC and roughly 95% of the material stays in mixed paper, contacts said this week. The ONP is not separated because it is market priced about $10 more than mixed paper, which is not enough to cover the labor for separating ONP out, contacts said. Various contacts claimed that a $20-25 higher cost is needed for ONP to be separat- ed from mixed and some US plants stopped sorting out ONP as well. The new program in BC started in the second half of May after Green by Nature EPR started collecting recyclables from 1.25 million homes in the province. In all, Green by Nature expects to collect almost 205,000 tons of packaging and print papers.
