Efficient laser performance has been obtained in Nd doped Sr{sub}5(PO{sub}4){sub}3F, Ba{sub}5(PO{sub}4){sub}3F, and Sr{sub}5(VO{sub}4){sub}3F crystals characterized by great products of the 4{sup left}F{sub}(3/2)-4{sup left}I{sub}(11/2) emission cross section and life-time. The absorption and emission lines in Tb doped (Sr{sub}(1-x)Ba{sub}x){sub}5(PO{sub}4){sub}3F mixed crystals shift as a function of x.4 The possibility of compositional wavelength tuning in other apatites is important to NASA which is searching for a laser material operating at 944.11 nm for water vapor sensing. Nd:Sr{sub}5(PO{sub}4){sub}3F laser operates at 0.945 μm. Apparently, the wavelength in mixed apatites can be tuned to 944.11 nm.
