Loblaw is to acquire Shoppers Drug Mart, the largest drug store chain in Canada, to create a more than C$42 billion/yr revenue firm that is competing against Walmart and Target, reports said this week. Loblaw calls itself Canada's largest food retailer with 1,400 supermarkets as well as drag and general merchandise stores. Loblaw is to pay $11.9 billion for Shoppers Drug Mart. The deal was announced as Target continues on its plan to open more than 20 stores in Canada this year, its first ones ever outside the USA, and Safeway recently sold its Canada business to Empire Co for about $5.68 billion. "With scale and capability, we will be-able 4b accelerate our momentum and strengthen our position in the increasingly competitive marketplace," said Loblaw Exec chmn Galen Weston, in a release. The Loblaw/Shoppers Drag Mart deal is to close in early 2014. Shoppers Drug Mart operates more than 1,200 retail drugs stores. Loblaw plans to introduce additional food in Shoppers Drag Marts, the Wall Street Journal reported this week. Also, Shoppers Drug Mart fills about 25 million prescriptions/yr or 25% of Canada's annual prescriptions, according to Loblaw.
