Total quality management principles: Implementation experience from Mexican organisations

The results of the research carried out by Global Manufacturing Research Group on 1,493 manufacturing plants from 25 countries showed that the best performers have quality as a competitive priority and the best quality practices was 5S which was found to be widely implemented. The research has tried to investigate the Japanese quality practice 5s in Latin American context. The study has investigated 50 Mexican manufacturing and service organizations which have implemented 5S practice and has tried to identify the significant success factors for implementing the 5S practice. As a result sixteen factors defining 51 significant relationships have been explained for the 5S success implementation. The positive impacts produced by 5S implementation have been summarized in six significant benefits: quality improvement, productivity improvement, cost reduction, production time reduction, work environment improvement, and reliability in production and delivery time. The surveyed organizations also defined a sequence for implementing 5S practice which was discussed. (50 refs.)
